How to Negotiate for a Higher Salary

In the old mindset, employees would never consider thinking of the tips to negotiating a higher salary. We’ve all been conditioned to wait for the right time to get a salary increase. If it comes, then that’s good news; if it doesn’t, then we should be patient enough to continue waiting until the day that it finally comes.

Today, this kind of timidity has no room in the workplace. The new school of thought for career growth and development entails that employees take charge of their future. This includes, but is not limited to, negotiating for a higher salary where applicable. Of course, a fundamental requirement before you even begin planning to negotiate a higher salary is to have an objective reason for this. In all honesty, we all want a higher salary. In reality, only a select few deserve a raise while the rest are just fine where they currently are.

If you are convinced that you really deserve higher pay and you have the reasons to back it up, here are some tips that will help you be more successful at getting a better number.

  • Set an appointment specifically for this purpose. Don’t expect your boss to listen if you’re broaching the topic during a water cooler break or in the hallway on the way to lunch. If you are truly serious with it, treat it as a business proposal that requires time to be explained.
  • Be prepared. Check the market for the salaries offered in similar positions to get a baseline of what you truly deserve. Prepare documentations to show what you have done for the company in the time that you’ve been there. If you can position your request as a merit increase or market adjustment based on the fact that your performance supports it, you are better off than if you were arguing from only a subjective, emotional, or gut-feel position.
  • Be direct and to the point. Use facts. Don’t bore your boss with a very long story about how your dog’s medical expenses have pushed you to a corner.
  • Get a referral or a sponsor where applicable. A senior employee that you work with on a regular basis can be a good referral. Regardless of how objective you are with the negotiation, it still helps if someone else can back you up.

Negotiating for a higher salary is not impossible. Plan for it properly and be prepared, but more importantly keep an open mind and be reasonable. If you can treat it like a project where organization, objectivity, and planning are essential, then you are halfway towards getting the salary increase that you deserve.

    I’m presently up for any government position with my City’s Solicitor office. the positioning is really a Program Paralegal. The salary range for that position is 31-47’s. I’ve 2 yrs of police force experience in addition to a B.S. Political Science along with a Masters in public places administration by having an empahasis running a business Administration. After I questioned through the City Solicitor he explained the postition was an unclassified position which he could hire whoever he sees fit and that he does not need to go via a register. So, with this being stated can i negotiate my salary? If that’s the case, what must i request for?

    I’m very thinking about going for a job. I really like everything about this. However, i believe i get scammed around the salary offer. How do you even approach the subject without losing the chance. I actually want to push for that greater salary which i think is both fair and deserved, but i’d rather not be ignored altogether. Any advice?

    I received employment offer for 65K + good benefits package. I would like 70K, and so i counter-offered with 80K hoping meeting somewhere in the centre. Their response: we all know your market price is greater according to “some” surveys, But 65K is fair, thinking about the handsome benefits package + possibility of future boosts.

    Shall We Be Held capable of continue settling salary? If that’s the case, how do you start that without coming off as greedy?

    Note: fresh grad having a rare skill that’s high sought after. I understand I’m their finest (and most likely only) applicant.

    I had been given a deal letter for any position, however, I had been also offered another position, greater salary but I’d rather go ahead and take first offer since the organization is much better and there’s more growth however are two different positions. Can One request for any greater salary while using other offer letter? How do you negotiate a greater salary within the offer letter?
